HISTORY

In the early days, when the country was still under the Spaniards, buildings were made from the beds of the Guadalupe River, which is now called Pahina Creek. Gathering stone and gravel were done by Filipinos and supervised by Spaniards, yet there was no payment for the Filipinos at all. The place was used to be called "Faena" - a Spanish word meaning work. Whenever the pace of the Filipinos slackened, the Spaniard overseeing them would shout “Faena" to make them work faster. For some reason, the Guadalupe River area from San Nicolas to Sanciangko Street was named Faena. This was replaced by Pahina in the later years. And since the place is located downtown, "Central" was incorporated, hence, the present name "Pahina Central".
