CEBU CITY, Philippines – Environmental advocates from at least Thirty Environmental-related organizations in Cebu joined forces in pushing for the confirmation of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary-designate Regina “Gina” Paz Lopez on March 1, 2017 Wednesday.

The activity was conducted in showing support for the supposed confirmation hearing of Gina Lopez by the Commission on Appointments (COA) as DENR chief on Wednesday. However, following the shakeup with the the Senate's Committee chairmanships, the hearing was cancelled with no definite date yet.

The advocates drafted a unified position paper expressing their support for Gina Lopez and hold a Press Conference at the Gansewinkel Hall of University of San Carlos Main Campus in Cebu City.

“We call on the government to support the appointment of leaders who are strong enough in their resolve of protecting the environment and carrying out the very mandate of the institution they are assigned to,” part of the position paper reads.

Gina Lopez successfully led many Environmental projects such as the rehabilitation and preservation of the Pasig River, La Mesa Watershed, La Mesa Ecopark, and Iwahig River in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan even before she started as DENR chief designate. She became controversial after she ordered the stoppage of Mining Operations in many parts of the country within the few months of her stint.

Days before her supposed confirmation hearing, Lopez posted a video message in her official Facebook page with a caption “Big day para sa atin ang March 1.
