CEBU CITY, Philippines – To reminisce the past and spur the grandeur of the future of the legacies of our Philippine National Hero, the Cebu City Government remembered the 156th Birth Anniversary of Dr. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda on June 19, 2017 Monday.

An Ecumenical Prayer was offered in honor of the birthday celebrant right after the Flag Raising Ceremony at the Plaza Sugbo in front of Cebu City Hall.

Thousands of Cebu City Government employees including representatives from the different sectors also offered Birthday Song and Cake with candles for our country’s National Hero.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña blew the candle in behalf of the celebrant. It was also the first time in history of the city’s celebration of Rizal’s Birth Anniversary where a cake and birthday song was offered.

As part of the celebration, at least the 175 children in the Cebu City Operation Second Chance Center underwent a free lecture of Rizal’s Life which was initiated by Cebu City Cultural and Historical Affairs Office (CHAO).

In the meantime, in line also with the celebration, CHAO together with the Knights of Rizal also hold an exhibit dubbed as “Rizaliana Exhibit” at the Cebu City Museum, 2nd Floor of Rizal Museum and Public Library Building along Osmeña Boulevard this city.

Cebu City Museum administrator Bryner Diaz said that the Rizaliana Exhibit aims to memorialize as well as introduce to the millennials the legacies and heroism of Rizal, adding that it will run until June 30 this year.

Moreover, the Exhibit features Paintings, Memorabilia, Old News Clippings, Stamps, Artworks, Evolution and History of the Philippine Flag and Facsimile copy from the original source of Rizal’s El Filibusterismo.
