CEBU CITY, Philippines – In order to have a disaster resilient community, Disaster Officers in both Cebu City and Province pointed out that disaster preparedness must start in the Family.

“Kung andam ang Pamilya sa kalamidad, luwas ang kumonidad (If the Family is prepared for disaster, the community will be safe,” dela Calzada enthuses.
For his part, Alcontin shared that the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office also invested more on disaster preparedness among the four thematic areas of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Plan, adding that they have already the template for Natural Hazards.
The four thematic areas of NDRRMC included (1) Disaster Prevention and Mitigation; (2) Disaster Preparedness; (3) Disaster Response; and (4) Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery.
Both dela Calzada and Alcontin encouraged the public to do their share for disaster preparedness to follow the early warning system and monitor updates from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
During the activity, PAGASA Cebu OIC Engr. Alfredo Quiblat also shared the activities for the observance of the Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week from June 19-24 with the theme, "Science-Based Information for Safer Nation Against Typhoon and Flood."

He said the country will experience 9 to 14 more tropical cyclones expected until towards the end of the year, citing that PAGASA will always issue public warning and advisory as needed.
The discussion also highlighted several solutions and interventions from both the City and Province of Cebu in terms of preparedness for typhoon and flood.
