The Cebu City Government, thru the Office of Mayor Tommy Osmeña and the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CCENRO) will host this year’s observance of Earth Hour on March 24 at the Plaza Independencia.
CCENRO chief Ma. Nida Cabrera underscored that several environmental advocates, organizations and nature lovers will converge at the Plaza Independencia to join in the celebration.
“The highlight of our celebration is to help combat climate change through the use of renewable energy,” Cabrera said.
Known for her environmental advocacies when she was still in the city council, Cabrera added that a series of activities are lined up for the celebration.
An exhibit of various products and inventions using renewable energy will also be conducted at the Plaza Independencia 1PM on the same day while various presentations promoting environmental preservation and conservation will take place at 5pm. It is open to the public for free.
A switch off will start the Earth Hour at 8:30PM and will end at 9:30PM while activities such as Fire Dance, Candle Lighting, Fun Run and Bicycle Night Ride, among others, will be conducted.
Earth Hour is a global campaign to showcase activities that combat Climate Change. Held every fourth Saturday of March, Earth Hour is a worldwide initiative showing how individuals, communities, businesses and governments can address the threat of global warming if everyone will work together.
The public is encouraged to join in the celebration and challenged to take personal accountability for their climate impact and make behavioral changes to facilitate a low-carbon lifestyle. (By: Greggy P. Senados/ City of Cebu, Public Information Office)
