CEBU CITY, Philippines – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte led the ground-breaking ceremony of the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) also known by many as the ‘Third Bridge’ to span the Mactan Channel, held at the Dapitan-Pilipog Area in Cordova Town yesterday afternoon March 2, 2017 Thursday.
“Our Country will become a network of bridges and it will start here in the Visayas with the construction of this new bridge,” President Duterte underscored, adding that there will be more bridges that will connect Cebu to Bohol, Ilo-ilo, Guimaras, and Negros, and in other parts of the country.
The 8.25-kilometer Cebu-Cordova Bridge Project is slated to start construction by July this year. The project will be made possible with Public Private Partnership (PPP) by the City of Cebu and Cordova Town with the support from the National Government and the Metro Pacific Tollways Development Corp. (MPTDC) under the leadership Manny V. Pangilinan.
In his message, Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña said that the project is a timely intervention to create job opportunities, boost tourism, enhance economic developments in Cebu and help address traffic congestion in Metro Cebu especially with the expansion of the Mactan Cebu International Airport, among other benefits.
"It was my dream for Cordova to be part of Cebu City, now with this bridge Cebu City will be part of Cordova," Mayor Osmeña added in jest.
During the Press Conference held in Radisson Blu Hotel right after the ground-breaking ceremony, Rodrigo Franco, president of MPTDC bared that the toll fee will depend on the final configuration cost of the project, however initial proposed toll fee will range from P82 to P89 per vehicle which is a price projection when the bridge will be operational.
Franco said they are into putting balance between Environment and Development and will comply with all necessary government permits. He also added that separate bike and motorcycle lanes will be embedded in the project including the provision for pedestrians.
The P28-billion project which is expected to be completed in Year 2020 comprises the Main Bridge, Viaduct, Toll Plaza and Causeway. It will pave way to a network of roads that will have the alignment and connection on the side of Cebu City passing through ramps from part of South Road Properties and at the mouth of Guadalupe River. It will be longer than the existing Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the old Mandaue-Mactan Bridge.
The Main Bridge which will consider that it will not hamper the regular navigational route of various ships along Cebu Mactan Channel will connect Guadalupe River to the Shell Island in Cordova Town and a Viaduct that will bring the bridge to the level of the Causeway and road networks to the Mactan Island.
Furthermore, hundreds of guests graced the historical activity including other officials from Malacañang Palace, Cebu City Officials led by Mayor Osmeña, Cordova Town Officials, MPTDC Executives, Representatives from different Government Agencies, members of the Local and National Media and the General Public, among several others.
