Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) General Manager Engr. Jose Eugenio Singson, Jr. reported that Cebu City is now suffering huge water shortage and they are doing their best to address the problem with the help of the Cebu City Government.
He explained that as per report today, a gross normal production should have been about 238,000 cubic meters but right now, production has depleted to 40,000 cubic meters which is now 195,000 cubic meters per day.
With this, MCWD is looking into constructing a desalination plant, which is the processing of salt water directly from the sea, one source would be in Mactan Island, two kilometers away from the shore, which can produce up to 100,000 cubic meters per day.
Another possible ideal site is the Cansaga in Tayud, Consolacion but can produce lesser volume of up to 50,000 cubic meters per day only, similar to that of Talisay.
For the short term plan, Singson said Compostela and Danao will be reactivated as well as those intervention being offered by the Cebu City Government like extraction of these underground lots for possible source of water. (Farlash Acenas, Margie Bulado & Tito Basilisco/PIO)
